Insurance Workshops Brings Experts to Delray-Boca

State Sen. Maria Sachs

State Sen. Maria Sachs

September is the height of hurricane season and as much as we don’t want to admit it—we’re vulnerable.

Not only does the threat of severe weather impact us from a health and safety standpoint, but it also affects our homes and businesses as well.

With that in mind, State Sen. Maria Sachs who represents Delray Beach is hosting a series of workshops this month designed to give residents and business owners an overview of the property insurance marketplace in South Florida.

Sen. Sachs has arranged for a group of experts to visit Delray, Boca, Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale to answer questions, dispense information and help citizen’s access services.

The Delray Beach workshop will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Delray Beach Public Library, 100 West Atlantic Ave.

“The workshops are purely information,” says Sachs. “The goal is to provide as much information as possible and to answer questions that business owners and homeowners might have.”

If you can’t make the Delray workshop you can catch the event in Boca Raton, 6 p.m. on Sept. 12 at the  new Downtown Library, 400 NW 2nd Avenue.

“The workshops are being held because it has come to the attention of the Senator that there is great public interest in this subject area,” says Joshua Freeman, chief of staff to the Senator. “The workshops are open to the public.  Everyone is welcome to attend whichever session is most convenient for them and they are encouraged to bring their property insurance policy with them, in order to have their specific questions answered.”

The workshops will feature several representatives from state agencies and consumer advocacy groups.  The panelists will include representatives from the Office of Insurance Regulation, Department of Financial Services, Florida Association for Insurance Reform, and Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.

Each panelist will introduce themselves and describe their role and their agency’s role.  After the introductions, there will be a chance for the public to ask questions of the representative they believe will best be able to help them.

Property insurance in Florida has been a hot button issue for the past decade, with dramatic increases in cost coming as a result of hurricanes in 2004-2005.

The issue has been front burner for local and statewide business groups because the high cost of insurance is viewed as a drag on business already in the state and a hindrance to attracting new business to Florida.

Residents have also complained and realtor groups have expressed concern that the costs have made home ownership costs prohibitive for many.

Local governments have also made property insurance reform a priority over the years.

Efforts to create a national disaster fund to spread risk have failed in Congress.

Steely Dan Comes To Mizner Park

Steely Dan 2013

Steely Dan 2013

Steely Dan is coming to Mizner Park.

The veteran jazz rock Hall of Famers will play the Mizner Park Amphitheatre, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m.

A staple of rock radio in the 70s and 80s, Steely Dan has sold more than 40 million records while winning critical acclaim for their complex compositions, smart lyrics and innovative studio production techniques.

Formed in the early 70s by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, Steely Dan toured widely from 1972-1974 before retiring to the studio. The band split up in 1981 and both Becker and Fagen pursued solo projects.

The duo reunited in 1993 and won four Grammy awards for their comeback album “Two Against Nature.”

Despite taking long breaks in between projects and rarely touring, Steely Dan never lost their popularity and their music continues to be a constant on classic rock radio and even jazz outlets.

Among our favorite Steely Dan songs: “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”, “Reeling In The Years”, “My Old School”, “Do It Again, “Aja” and “Deacon Blues.”

The Arts Garage’s Jazz Project has attracted world class talent to Delray

If you’re searching for something great to do this weekend, look no further than Delray’s Arts Garage.

Venezuelan pianist- composer Silvano Monasterios and The 4th World Ensemble will be perform Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Monasterios was voted best Jazz Musician in Miami by New Times magazine in 2009 and blends Latin rhythms, jazz and world music.

Heavy on percussion and rhythms, the ensemble’s work is often classified  as Latin Jazz, but in reality it defies that easy description and combines a range of influences including European and American Jazz.

Delray Events Sweep Awards

The one and only Mr. Garlic.

The one and only Mr. Garlic.

Delray Beach has earned a reputation as America’s Most Fun Small City.

A large part of that distinction is due to the vast array of events that make Delray a vibrant place year round.

It takes a lot of effort to pull off those events but the hard work culminated in an award-winning day for Delray Beach at the recent convention of the Florida Festivals & Events Association (FFEA). Stephanie Immelman, Executive Director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC),  announced that the organization has been named the winner of 11 prestigious SUNsational Awards, while Nancy Stewart, president of the Festival Management Group, is pleased about winning another 9 awards.

“Everyone at the DBMC, FMG and the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce is excited and honored to win these awards,” said Immelman, “because they recognize our track record for producing high-quality, year-round events and activities that support our local business community, while also promoting the image of Delray Beach as a great place to live, work and play.”

The DBMC received four awards for producing the annual July 4th Celebration, three awards for the popular On The Ave series, and two each for two different headline-grabbing promotions: Spin the Vote On the Ave and the Delray Beach Dinner in the Sky.

At the same time, Delray Beach-based Festival Management Group won seven awards for events produced by the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce two more two awards for their Delray Beach Garlic Fest.

“These awards show that Delray Beach continues to set the bar for other communities,” said Stewart. “We’re proud that our organizations were able to ‘bring it home’ for Delray Beach.”

“Working together, the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative, the Chamber and Festival Management Group are able to generate an enormous amount of publicity about Delray Beach, resulting in an increased awareness of the area,” Immelman agreed. “Certainly, that has a direct positive economic impact on the entire city.”

Tickets Available For Lynn Theater Series

Tap: The Show is one of the highlights of Lynn's new season.

Tap: The Show is one of the highlights of Lynn’s new season.

It’s not too early to book your social calendar for the 2013-14 theater season.

Season subscriptions and individual show tickets are now available for the popular Libby Dodson’s Live at Lynn theater series at Lynn University in Boca Raton.

Scheduled headliners at the impressive Wold Performing Arts Center include a return visit by the Capitol Steps, a book musical featuring songs by Johnny Cash, a tribute to the Bee Gees, a salute to tap dancing, four Broadway headliners and the Tony Award-winning Sweet Charity.

“Once again, this year’s Live at Lynn Theatre Series will host six amazing shows that will delight entertainment fans of all ages. Anyone who loves beautiful music and dance, all brilliantly performed by top-tier talents, should plan now on attending every knock-out production,” said Jan McArt, producer and director of theatre arts program development.

The Capitol Steps will perform on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. This show puts the “mock” in democracy. Capitol Steps was born in 1981 when some senate staffers wanted to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they dug into the headlines and created song parodies and skits that convey their special brand of satirical humor.

Ring of Fire, based on music by Johnny Cash, will be performed on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. This toe-tapping, book musical features 14 performers, including two-time Grammy Award winner Lari White and Tony Award winner Jarrod Emick. Coming from Broadway, this theatrical delight includes 38 hit songs by the legendary man in black.

Tap: The Show will be performed on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 5 at 4 p.m. This nonstop, rhythmic energy show is wrapped in dazzling costumes and backed by a soaring orchestral score. An extravaganza of award-winning dancers and singers, this show brings you re-creations of Broadway show-stoppers, soft shoe, flamenco, Irish step and more.

Stayin’ Alive One Night of the Bee Gees will be performed on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. This show pays homage to one of the most legendary groups of all time, the Bee Gees, who provided the soundtrack to the blockbuster disco flick, Saturday Night Fever. Three talented singers will rekindle the magic memories of numerous mega-hits such as “How Deep is Your Love.” (Where have you gone Karen Lynn Gorney?)

Sweet Charity will be performed on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, March 16 at 4 p.m. Winner of five Tony Awards, this tender, poignant and consistently funny show created by Neil Simon follows the love-challenged misadventures of Charity Valentine, a “lady of the evening” who always gives her heart and her earnings to the wrong man. The tuneful score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields includes “Hey, Big Spender” and other audience favorites.

It’s a girls night out on March 29 and 30 with Broadway headliners Christine Andreas (La Cage aux Folles), Andrea McArdle (Annie), Maureen McGovern (Little Women) and Faith Prince (Guys and Dolls). This show presents these four award-winning show biz veterans performing some of the biggest hits from Broadway. Performance times for “4 Girls 4” are Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.

Also during 2013-14 season, the Wold Performing Arts Center will be home for the “American Songbook Series,” featuring musical tributes by Marshall Turkin and the Classic Jazz Ensemble to immortal songwriters and singers including George Gershwin (Nov. 3); Marvin Hamlish, Dave Brubeck and Whitney Houston (Jan. 12); the music and times of African-Americans and all that jazz (Feb. 2); Cole Porter (March 9); and Jerry Herman (April 27). All performances are at 4 p.m.

The 750-seat Wold Performing Arts Center, located on Lynn University’s campus in Boca Raton, is easily accessible by both I-95 and Florida’s Turnpike.

Season subscriptions are now available at a 25 percent discount: $225 for orchestra seats (regularly $300) and $202 for mezzanine seating (usually $270). Individual show tickets are $40 for box, $30 for orchestra and $25 for mezzanine.

Both season subscriptions and individual show tickets can be purchased by phone at (561) 237-9000, online at give.lynn.edu/theatrearts or at the box office at the Wold Performing Arts Center.

“ART CINEMA AT THE CREST” will offer a variety of films on eight consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 10 and running through Aug. 28. Screenings are at 6 and 8:30 p.m.

“We’re looking to create a very unique experience,” says Center Director Joe Gillie. “We think this is going to be a very popular series.”

A Kiss is Just a Kiss and The Dude

The cinema fest kicks off July 10 with the classic Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

This 1942 film set in North Africa tops many critics’ list as one of the best films of all time.

The series continues July 17 with the cult classic “The Big Lebowski” starring Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges and John Goodman.

This 1998 film follows the adventures of “The Dude” portrayed memorably by Bridges.

On July 24, the series gives us a change of pace with the classic story “Anna Karenina” starring Matthew Macfadyen, Keira Knightley and Jude Law.  Set in late-19th-century Russian high-society, the aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair with the affluent Count Vronsky.

The film was released in 2012 to rave reviews.

On July 31, the critically acclaimed but little seen “Price Check” will be screened.

The film stars indie darling Parker Posey with Eric Mabius and Annie Parisse.

Peter, a family man who works for a failing supermarket chain finds his life shaken up by his new boss, Susan, who starts to groom him for an executive position in this comedy drama.

The doc traces the history of the famed Van Nuys, California recording studio.

On August 14, fans of Dustin Hoffman won’t want to miss his directorial debut “Quartet.”

The popular film, in current release, stars the legendary Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay and Billy Connolly. The action takes place in a senior home populated by retired musicians.

Based on a popular novel, “Perks” is a great coming of age story with amazing performances, crisp writing and a killer soundtrack. Don’t miss this one.

The series concludes Aug. 28 with “If I Were You”, a 2012 comedy/drama starring Marcia Gay Harden, Leonor Watling and Aidan Quinn.  When a woman tries to outwit her husband’s sexy young mistress, the unexpected consequences include starring as King Lear in a very amateur production – with the mistress. Enough said.

As Roger Ebert used to say: “See you at the movies.”

No ordinary Affair…A Delray Affair

The Delray Affair, originally known as The Delray Gladioli Festival was created in Delray Beach shortly after World War II in 1947.

The festival was created to provide farmers a way to display and sell their flowers to the public. Farms that spanned from Congress Avenue to US Highway 441 participated in this festival to make some money. It was held each February in the 40’s and 50’s and attracted both tourists and local residents.

“It was an exposition that attracted flower buyers from all over the country,” said Roy Simon, a Delray Beach native and former Chamber of Commerce member that has been a volunteer since it was the Gladioli Festival. He helped the festival evolve into what it is today.

Due to development and a transition from flower farming to vegetable farming, The Delray Gladioli Festival died out and transitioned into the small Agricultural Expo. Roy Simon envisioned more for the Expo and was inspired to add art by the Winter Park Art Festival. Wanting to improve upon the festival and increase profits for the community, Simon helped gather local community leaders for an organizational meeting. It was at this first meeting in 1962 that the committee and their chair, John Bordeman, chose “The Delray Affair” as the name of the festival that would now include arts and crafts in addition to agricultural goods. The affair was developed to extend the snowbird season by one week so that city merchants could make some more money during the slow season.

The festival is now held in Downtown Delray Beach along Atlantic Avenue. The festival is historically held on the weekend after Easter in order to extend the tourist season and create an incentive for seasonal residents to stay longer. The festival has grown from 24 exhibitors in 1962 to now having over 700 exhibitors with nearly 300,000 people that attend. Admission is free however it costs $5 for public parking.

Over the years, The Delray Affair has made an economic impact of over $40 million for the city of Delray Beach. According to the Palm Beach County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, The Delray Affair plays a very important role in tourism which is one of their major industries. Tourism generates a direct annual economic impact of over $3 billion in the local economy, $29 million in bed-tax revenue and lodging sales exceeding $600 million.
