The Legendary Johnny Cash

The Arts Garage’s production of “Ring of Fire” has been a huge critical and commercial hit with sold out shows and rave reviews.

A few tickets remain for matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The show features the music of the legendary Johnny Cash.

Visit www.artsgarage.org for tickets and more information, but hurry tickets are selling.

 Oh What A Night

While we’re talking about music legends, walk like a man (sorry we couldn’t resist) and make sure to see Jersey Boys at a theater near you this weekend.

Don’t believe the reviews, the movie is terrific and the music of the Four Seasons is sublime.

It’s also just a great story of four guys from Newark who made it in a very tough business with a unique sound and infectious songs.

Word of warning: the music will stick in your head. The movie includes most of the hits including killer versions of “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.”

Jost Project this Friday at Arts Garage

Mark your calendars for June 13 and head on over to the Arts Garage at 8 p.m. for a performance of the renowned Jost Project.

Paul Jōst (vocals, harmonica), Tony Miceli (vibraphones) and Kevin MacConnell (acoustic bass) make up the jazz collective initially formed by Tony and Kevin, with the purpose of performing the rock music that they grew up with in a jazz format.

The seeds of this idea were planted in Tony’s 2005 recording “Hippie Jazz.” When Tony heard Paul, a multi-talented musician as well as vocalist, he felt such a strong musical connection that he invited him to be part of the group. Because of Paul’s strong musical influence and arranging talent, Tony and Kevin were convinced the group should have Paul’s name and they became The Jōst Project.

The combination fit and The Jōst Project grew in popularity. Tony’s vibraphone stirs echoes of the famed Modern Jazz Quartet with Milt Jackson. Kevin’s lyrical playing is an essential element and Jōst invokes blues, mainstream, and scat stylings in his unique introspective way, bringing out the emotions contained in the songs. It’s immediately evident that these skilled artists each bring their distinctive experience and approach to this blended collective.

The ever-expanding repertoire of The Jōst Project include rock/pop classics as “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” (Iron Butterfly), “What a Day For a Day Dream” (John Sebastian/Loving Spoonful), “Sunshine Superman” (Donovan), “Walk This Way” (Aerosmith), “Tennessee Waltz” (Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King), “Come Together” and “And I Love Her” (The Beatles), “Kashmir” (Led Zepellin), “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” (Simon and Garfunkel), “Maybe I’m Amazed” (Paul McCartney), and “Can’t Find My Way Home” (Blind Faith). For good measure, jazz compositions like “Don’t Forget the Poet” (Encrico Pierannuzi), “Caravan” (Dizzy Gillespie), “Waltz New” (Jim Hall), and “Passion Dance” (McCoy Tyner) are also included in the group’s playlists.

This one sounds interesting…

Weekend Best Bets: Popcorn and Mozart

Waste Land was an audience favorite at Sundance

Waste Land was an audience favorite at Sundance

Free Movie Friday

Head on over to Art House Delray for a free movie tonight beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“Wasteland” is the flick and the nice folks at Art House will provide the pop corn and the yerba mate. You’ll have to bring your own candy and beach chair.

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” — self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Directed by Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) Wasteland was a hit at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Art House is located at 255 NE Sixth Ave.

Music at St. Paul’s

Make room on the calendar this weekend for a 3 p.m. Sunday concert at beautiful St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on South Swinton Avenue.

Pianist Roberta Rust and mezza soprano Maria Heslop Ward will perform Mozart, Brahms, Mahler and more.

Weekend Best Bet: All American Tailgate Party

A Tailgate Party: Delray style.

A Tailgate Party: Delray style.

It’s been billed as South Florida’s largest tailgate party and it happens right here in Delray Beach.

But unlike other tailgate parties which are designed to rev you up for the big game, the “All American Delray Tailgate” party is designed to raise money for local kids, specifically children who attend the Delray-based Achievement Centers for Children and Families, a local non-profit with a rich history of taking good care of Delray’s most at risk children.

The 8th annual Tailgate Party is set for May 31 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Delray Center for the Performing Arts at Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave.

Fans who attend will enjoy food from popular Delray Beach restaurants, craft micro-brew beer, live entertainment and a Family Fun Zone.

Hosted by the Delray Beach Initiative, proceeds from this event help low-income children and families in the community. The event is volunteer-driven with all net proceeds benefiting the Achievement Centers for Children & Families.

The Delray Beach Initiative is a brand new group of business and civic leaders who have come together for the express purpose of raising money to benefit local children. So far, the Initiative, founded by Stuart and Shelby Development CEO Chuck Halberg has hosted singer-songwriter events and a charity cruise that benefitted Pine Grove Elementary School, a local Title 1 school in which many students are on the free and reduced lunch program.

But the big event for the Initiative is the Tailgate which over the past eight years has become a Delray Beach tradition.

The goal this year is to raise $35,000.

“We’re swinging for the fences,” said Halberg. “I think with the community’s support we can do it.”

Admission is $25 for adults, youth ages 13-20 is $10 and children are free.

Admission includes free parking (before 5 pm), lots of food, craft beers, live entertainment and fantastic door prizes and giveaways…not to mention the Family Fun Zone with entertainment for the entire family.

Delray Beach Initiative members have been successful in landing a who’s who of business sponsors including Stuart & Shelby Development, Real Time Marketing, Iberia Bank, Delray Elks Lodge 1770, Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament, Jaxx Consulting Technology, attorney Lee Cohen, Weiner, Lynne and Thompson Attorneys at Law, Scirocco Insurance, the Delray Beach Police Department, DADA restaurant, Waste Management, Delray Motors, Embroid Me, Island Air Conditioning, Chamber Men’s Group, Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, City of Delray, Red Hook, Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza, Delray Center for the Performing Arts, Pixel Print, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Papas Tapas, Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza, The Pineapple, Grand Tavern, BJ’s, Southgate Design, Silver Star Provisions, Cheney Brothers, Fresh Meal Plan and Atlantic Ave magazine.
