It’s Father’s Day weekend, but if you are thinking of getting dad a tie, or a “World’s Best Dad” mug guess again.

Here are a few events, to consider. Or better yet, let him golf, fish or nap. The “honey do” list can wait until next week.

Library Debuts New Art Exhibit

The Delray Beach Public Library, 100 West Atlantic Avenue,  is proud to present a new exhibit entitled: “Art Work by Rick Ricketts & Photography by Judith Acker” which will be on display at the Delray Beach Library’s 2nd floor Gallery from June 14, 2014 – August 9, 2014.

Mr. Ricketts and Ms. Acker have graciously agreed to donate a portion of the proceeds of any sales back to the Library.

Rick Ricketts came to South Florida at the age of ten and has been creating beautiful landscapes, paintings depicting the ocean and his natural surroundings in acrylic and oil paintings ever since. He is also an actor, entertainer and Elvis impersonator. Yes, Elvis.

Judith Acker is a talented photographer with a broad background in the study of art and photography. While in New York, Ms. Acker worked with the celebrated Magnum Photographers. She received an Associates’ degree in Photography from the Fashion Institute of Technology, a B.A. in Art & Education from Molloy College and an M.S. degree in Reading from Adelphi University.

You won’t want to miss this exhibit.

Jost Project this Friday at Arts Garage

Mark your calendars for June 13 and head on over to the Arts Garage at 8 p.m. for a performance of the renowned Jost Project.

Paul Jōst (vocals, harmonica), Tony Miceli (vibraphones) and Kevin MacConnell (acoustic bass) make up the jazz collective initially formed by Tony and Kevin, with the purpose of performing the rock music that they grew up with in a jazz format.

The seeds of this idea were planted in Tony’s 2005 recording “Hippie Jazz.” When Tony heard Paul, a multi-talented musician as well as vocalist, he felt such a strong musical connection that he invited him to be part of the group. Because of Paul’s strong musical influence and arranging talent, Tony and Kevin were convinced the group should have Paul’s name and they became The Jōst Project.

The combination fit and The Jōst Project grew in popularity. Tony’s vibraphone stirs echoes of the famed Modern Jazz Quartet with Milt Jackson. Kevin’s lyrical playing is an essential element and Jōst invokes blues, mainstream, and scat stylings in his unique introspective way, bringing out the emotions contained in the songs. It’s immediately evident that these skilled artists each bring their distinctive experience and approach to this blended collective.

The ever-expanding repertoire of The Jōst Project include rock/pop classics as “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” (Iron Butterfly), “What a Day For a Day Dream” (John Sebastian/Loving Spoonful), “Sunshine Superman” (Donovan), “Walk This Way” (Aerosmith), “Tennessee Waltz” (Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King), “Come Together” and “And I Love Her” (The Beatles), “Kashmir” (Led Zepellin), “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” (Simon and Garfunkel), “Maybe I’m Amazed” (Paul McCartney), and “Can’t Find My Way Home” (Blind Faith). For good measure, jazz compositions like “Don’t Forget the Poet” (Encrico Pierannuzi), “Caravan” (Dizzy Gillespie), “Waltz New” (Jim Hall), and “Passion Dance” (McCoy Tyner) are also included in the group’s playlists.

This one sounds interesting…

Waste Land was an audience favorite at Sundance

Waste Land was an audience favorite at Sundance

Free Movie Friday

Head on over to Art House Delray for a free movie tonight beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“Wasteland” is the flick and the nice folks at Art House will provide the pop corn and the yerba mate. You’ll have to bring your own candy and beach chair.

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” — self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Directed by Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) Wasteland was a hit at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Art House is located at 255 NE Sixth Ave.

Woodfield Provides On-Site Herb Garden; Embraces New Trend

Woodfield Country Club is tapping into a national trend of incorporating food and health into community living.

Woodfield Country Club is tapping into a national trend of incorporating food and health into community living.

Woodfield Country Club is “walking the walk.” Literally.

With a focus on healthy living that is reflected by a club environment featuring workout facilities, spa, golf and tennis, this community continues to take this philosophy to the dining rooms and to expanded activities.

Woodfield’s herbal garden and “Nature Walk” have piqued the interest of residents who want to learn about healthy eating and Florida fauna and wildlife.

“This has been of great interest to our residents, their children, and friends,” said Eben Molloy, General Manager of Woodfield Country Club. “In addition to educating people on various ingredients to healthy meals, the nature walk has also provided a fascinating way to exercise.”

The English-style herb garden opened in 2012 and is modeled after a Formal Renaissance Kitchen Garden. The Woodfield landscaping team harvests the produce and then turns it over to the country club culinary team which then incorporates it into meals on the menu. The harvests throughout the year include corn, okra, egg plant, heirloom tomatoes, peppers, radishes, basil, parsley, dill, coconuts, lemon grass, and pomegranate, to name a few. These plants are nurtured in the elaborate Woodfield greenhouse prior to planting.

“Our goal was to educate our residents on indigenous herbs, fruits, and vegetables,” said Bart Messing, Woodfield Executive Chef. “It has been a lot of fun and residents are enjoying having these items incorporated into many of our main entrees, appetizers and salads. After all, they come directly from our backyard.”

The herb garden is located to the rear of the main clubhouse and provides unique landscaping and views from the expansive patio. These efforts were recently sited with the Florida Nursery Growers & Landscape Association 2012 Award for Excellence.

“Many parents appreciate the efforts of our landscaping team because the garden gives their children an opportunity to learn about produce,” said Molloy. “It really comes to life when they see these items on our menu.”

The English Herb Garden is the first stop on a multi-stop nature walk that further educates strollers as they get exercise during the 2,293 step tour that takes approximately 45 minutes.

“Our goal was to create an informative and educational opportunity that incorporates an exercise regimen,” said Molloy. “Here at Woodfield, we continually introduce new types of healthy activities that enhance the lifestyle. This has been quite successful based on the numbers of people we see strolling through the gardens along the nature walk.”

The nature walk features a meandering self-guided tour that winds its way around the main clubhouse area and along the lake and sports areas.

The Nature Walk highlights include:

·        Thai Garden: An elaborate display of plants and flowers native to Thailand. It includes a display of orchids, native vegetation, rock elements, bamboo, and even the Cananga Odorata, which produces the fragrance in Chanel No. 5 perfume.

·        Fruit Trees: Featuring a wide range of exotic fruits from Malaysia, East Indies, Bangladesh, China, South America, and Mexico. If you’re a rum fan, you might be familiar with the aroma from the Pimenta Diocia, the spice used in Captain Morgan Rum.

·        Flowering Plants: Throughout the walk, strollers will be treated to a wide range of flowering plants, including golden trumpets, purple glory, plumeria (plants used to make Hawaiian leis), and many more.

·        Lakeside Wildlife: Along the lake there are many species of Florida wildlife including water turkey, great blue heron, limpkin, cormorant, and great egret.

·        Koi Pond: Located adjacent to the main clubhouse, this pond is stocked with colorful koi of varying colors.

·        Children’s Butterfly Garden: One of the highlights of the Nature Walk, the butterfly garden is a popular stop for adults and children alike. The combination of nectar plants, lime trees, and dill attracts a wide range of butterflies.

“We’ve been successful in providing a unique experience for our residents,” added Molloy. “It combines nutritional and wildlife education that has been incorporated into an entertaining and enjoyable exercise program.

“The other important aspect of the garden and nature walk is that it is part of our  “going green” initiative. In addition to using the herbs and vegetables on our menu, we also use fresh cut flowers from the nature walk to decorate the club.”

Weekend Best Bet: All American Tailgate Party

A Tailgate Party: Delray style.

A Tailgate Party: Delray style.

It’s been billed as South Florida’s largest tailgate party and it happens right here in Delray Beach.

But unlike other tailgate parties which are designed to rev you up for the big game, the “All American Delray Tailgate” party is designed to raise money for local kids, specifically children who attend the Delray-based Achievement Centers for Children and Families, a local non-profit with a rich history of taking good care of Delray’s most at risk children.

The 8th annual Tailgate Party is set for May 31 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Delray Center for the Performing Arts at Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave.

Fans who attend will enjoy food from popular Delray Beach restaurants, craft micro-brew beer, live entertainment and a Family Fun Zone.

Hosted by the Delray Beach Initiative, proceeds from this event help low-income children and families in the community. The event is volunteer-driven with all net proceeds benefiting the Achievement Centers for Children & Families.

The Delray Beach Initiative is a brand new group of business and civic leaders who have come together for the express purpose of raising money to benefit local children. So far, the Initiative, founded by Stuart and Shelby Development CEO Chuck Halberg has hosted singer-songwriter events and a charity cruise that benefitted Pine Grove Elementary School, a local Title 1 school in which many students are on the free and reduced lunch program.

But the big event for the Initiative is the Tailgate which over the past eight years has become a Delray Beach tradition.

The goal this year is to raise $35,000.

“We’re swinging for the fences,” said Halberg. “I think with the community’s support we can do it.”

Admission is $25 for adults, youth ages 13-20 is $10 and children are free.

Admission includes free parking (before 5 pm), lots of food, craft beers, live entertainment and fantastic door prizes and giveaways…not to mention the Family Fun Zone with entertainment for the entire family.

Delray Beach Initiative members have been successful in landing a who’s who of business sponsors including Stuart & Shelby Development, Real Time Marketing, Iberia Bank, Delray Elks Lodge 1770, Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament, Jaxx Consulting Technology, attorney Lee Cohen, Weiner, Lynne and Thompson Attorneys at Law, Scirocco Insurance, the Delray Beach Police Department, DADA restaurant, Waste Management, Delray Motors, Embroid Me, Island Air Conditioning, Chamber Men’s Group, Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, City of Delray, Red Hook, Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza, Delray Center for the Performing Arts, Pixel Print, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Papas Tapas, Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza, The Pineapple, Grand Tavern, BJ’s, Southgate Design, Silver Star Provisions, Cheney Brothers, Fresh Meal Plan and Atlantic Ave magazine.

Weekend Best Bets: Memorial Day Edition

As usual there are a ton of things to do this holiday weekend.

And while we wish you a relaxing three day weekend, we at YourDelrayBoca also urge you to remember the meaning behind Memorial Day.

We hope you find time this weekend to honor and pray for the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country.
We bring you a Memorial Day primer and urge you to visit Veterans Memorials in Delray and Boca this weekend.

Memorial Day is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May. The holiday was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the Civil War  to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who perished.

By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service.

The first widely publicized observance of a Memorial Day-type observance after the Civil War was said to be in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 1, 1865. During the war, Union soldiers who were prisoners had been held at the Charleston Race Course; at least 257 Union prisoners died there and were hastily buried in unmarked graves.

Together with teachers and missionaries, black residents of Charleston organized a May Day ceremony in 1865, which was covered by the national press. The freedmen cleaned up and landscaped the burial ground, building an enclosure and an arch labeled, “Martyrs of the Race Course.” Nearly 10,000 people, mostly freedmen, gathered on May 1 to commemorate the war dead. Involved were about 3,000 school children newly enrolled in freedmen’s schools, mutual aid societies, Union troops, black ministers, and white northern missionaries. Most brought flowers to lay on the burial field. Years later, the celebration would come to be called the “First Decoration Day” in the North.

Yale History Professor David Blight described the day: “This was the first Memorial Day. African Americans invented Memorial Day in Charleston, South Carolina. What you have there is black Americans recently freed from slavery announcing to the world with their flowers, their feet, and their songs what the war had been about. What they basically were creating was the Independence Day of a Second American Revolution.”

But some dispute whether Charleston was indeed the birthplace of Memorial Day. In 1966, President Johnson issued a decree naming Waterloo, N.Y. as the birthplace. It was said that a local pharmacist in Waterloo came up with the idea of a holiday remembering those who died in service to their country.

Regardless of the origin, please take a moment this weekend to talk to your children and visit a local cemetery.

We are taking Monday off. See you back here next Wednesday! Be safe.

Real Estate Monday: The Cost of Paradise

Still a value, but rising in cost.

Still a value, but rising in cost.

Paradise comes with a price.
After years of being known as a relatively inexpensive place to live, Florida is beginning to gain ground on feeder states like New York, but still has a long to go before it’s as expensive as California, the D.C. area, Hawaii and the Empire State.
Overall, it costs less to live in 33 states other than in Florida based on the latest analysis from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Snowbird states like Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania all rank as more affordable.
Florida tied with Oregon as 16th on the department’s affordability index, released Thursday in tandem with new personal income data. The new comparison tool, dubbed Regional Price Parities, measure the state-by-state differences in the price levels in a given year for goods and services such as food, energy and housing.
“For the first time, Americans looking to move or take a job anywhere in the country can compare inflation-adjusted incomes across states and metropolitan areas to better understand how their personal income may be affected by a job change or move,” U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker said in a statement. “Businesses considering relocating or establishing new plants also now have a comprehensive and consistent measure of differences in the cost of living and the purchasing power of consumers nationwide.”
The index expresses costs in an area as a percentage of the overall national price level for each year, which is set at 100.
The most expensive locale, Washington, D.C., had an index rating of 118.2; the least expensive state, Mississippi, stood at 86.4. Florida came in just under the national baseline at 98.8.
Hawaii was second most expensive state followed by New York. The bottom three were Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama, a popular retirement spot for Florida public pensioners.
Other high cost states were New Jersey, California, Maryland, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Just below Florida in cost of living are a few states that compete with the Sunshine State for retirees, second home buyers and others: they are Arizona (98.1), Texas (96.5), Georgia (92) and North Carolina (91.6).
“People are beginning to recognize that Florida has the best weather in the country, an improving school system and top flight universities,” says one local realtor. “There’s also lots of culture and great health care and that adds up to rising cost of living. It’s not politically correct to say it, but clients who think that we are going back to the old bargain Florida are just fantasizing. This is now a world class destination and the price tags are going to reflect that.”

Real Estate Monday: Westard Ho, Villagio Continues Trend

Elevations at Villagio Reserve are Spanish-Italian influenced.

Elevations at Villagio Reserve are Spanish-Italian influenced.

Grand openings are a sign of good times at Villaggio Reserve as the local real estate market continues to impress.

While coastal neighborhoods remain hot, western communities are also racking up sales as the Boca-Delray real estate market continues its strong run.

The western  trend continues to be 55+ communities with prices ranging from the mid $200s to over $1 million. Developers are touting proximity to downtown Delray Beach and local cultural amenities such as the Morikami Museum and shopping at the Delray Marketplace.

Villagio Reserve, built by Ansca Homes, celebrated the grand opening last weekend of its third neighborhood since construction on the 55+ community began in January. Ansca has positioned the neighborhood as an elegant community in “America’s Most Fun Small Town”, a testament to the continuing value created by Delray’s downtown entertainment and cultural district.

Villagio Reserve is located on Hagen Ranch Road and Atlantic Avenue, west of Delray Beach.

Each “grand opening” event has marked a milestone. A soft grand opening gave an insider’s first glance at plans for the new community of 598 homes. A formal grand opening was held in December and last weekend’s event marked the opening of a new enclave of 83 homes.  Residences are priced from $270,000 to $400,000.

“We’ve had tremendous sales and unbelievable construction starts,” said Ron Yuter, senior vice president with Ansca Homes. “Six months ago, we had nothing but streets and an entrance. By our grand opening weekend (April 19-20), visitors will see 60 homes under construction. That is a true testament to how excited the Delray Beach community has been about Villaggio Reserve.”

Already Villaggio Reserve has hit the “Century Mark,” selling more than 100 residences since sales began in January.

Every residence will deliver  architectural designs and amenities that elevate “standard” to new heights, says Yuter. Homes feature spacious rooms designed with elegance and style in mind. Design touches and amenities include coffered ceilings, granite counter tops and Kitchen Craft Cabinetry® in kitchens and baths.

Outside, Spanish-Italian designed exteriors, decorative stone driveways and walkways and lush landscaping highlight each home’s place in a development that exudes European styling. Impact-resistant windows and doors provide a measure of safety and peace of mind,

The new neighborhood also will be the closest yet to the Cabana Club – putting residents a short walk to Villaggio Reserve’s lifestyle destination and fitness facility. This 38,000-square-foot town square will serve up a multitude of activities designed to enrich daily life. Residents will enjoy dining indoors or on the covered patio. There will be activities like cards and games, to community or private events in the Grand Ballroom, to surfing free wi-fi on personal tablets or laptop computers.

For the fitness minded, a fully equipped and staffed Fitness Center will come complete with men’s and women’s locker rooms, massage tables, showers and sauna. Yoga, Zumba and other classes will be offered by on-site trainers skilled at customizing work-out routines. Outside, lighted tennis and “pickle ball” courts will be available for day or night play. Nearby, enjoy a game of Bocce ball, or take a dip in one of four pools – all surrounded by an expansive, resort-style pool deck.

For more information please visit  https://villaggioreserve.com/  The Sales Center is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
