Boca Raton Artists Guild Winter Show

By Dave Reeves

So…..we’re strolling down Atlantic Avenue the other night and my wife guides me toward the Boca Raton Artists Guild Gallery.

She along with fellow members have their work displayed at the recently opened show that extends through January. The hook? Wine and cheese. Never one to turn down a quick snack.

An outstanding selection of all kinds of work – oil paintings, photography, water color. And while I’m not an art aficionado, I was and have been quite impressed with the quality of work. Certainly worth a visit.  You never know. You might find that special piece of art that can decorate a room in the house.

The Guild has 11 shows every year.

Coming up is the organization’s Silent Art Auction, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11 at the gallery at 512 East Atlantic Avenue. For more information, call 561-278-7877 or visit www.bocaguild.com. Free and open to the public.

Speaking of art, the Boca Raton Museum Art School on Palmetto Park Road (801 W. Palmetto Park Rd) is currently enrolling students for its January term. A wide range of courses avaluable – jewelry making, oil, water color, etc. Call 561-392-2503 or visit https://www.bocamuseum.org.

A Tribute to The Beatles

We are big Beatles fans.

Sure, Jeff was six when the band broke up and Dave was more into Lawrence Welk in the 60s, but we recognize greatness when we see it.

Since John, Paul, George and Ringo will never play again in our lifetimes, we have to content ourselves with tribute bands.

And as far as Beatles tribute bands go, there’s none better than “Across the Universe”.

The foursome will play Friday night at 7:30 part of the free concert series at Delray Center for the Arts at Old School Square.

See you there.

Boat Parade

New Urbanism Guru in Delray Tonight

Andres Duany is in Delray tonight for a free lecture at the Crest Theater.

Andres Duany is in Delray tonight for a free lecture at the Crest Theater.

Do you love cities?
We do.

If you love cities and are interested in hearing what the future holds, Delray Beach Mayor Cary Glickstein invites you to attend a free lecture, tonight, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Crest Theatre, 51 N. Swinton Ave.

Visionary architect Andres Duany, known world- wide as one of the fathers of “new urbanism” will offer a provocative talk entitled “A Century For Cities – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”.

The talk is part of a new series of town hall meetings curated by Glickstein who recently held a session on the state of education in Delray. Last week, he announced an ambitious lecture series that will feature top thought leaders on a variety of subjects ranging from parking and smart growth to urban design and transportation.

All lectures are free.

Duany is a particularly compelling figure. Along with his wife, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Duany is a pioneer in the new urbanist movement which essentially calls for a return to some of the traditions of early American towns—town squares, compact development, walkability and yes the dreaded word, density.

New urbanism was developed as an answer to suburban sprawl and urban disinvestment.

One of Duany’s signature projects is Seaside, Florida in the Panhandle. The picturesque community has earned widespread acclaim for its architecture and pedestrian orientation. Critics say it wasn’t dense enough and therefore wasn’t sustainable economically. As a result, Seaside has become a popular vacation and second home destination, but the community doesn’t have the economies of scale to support a true, live, work, play lifestyle.

Regardless, it’s influence has been immense and several communities strive to mimic Seaside’s stunning design.

Duany is a founding principal of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company which has designed over 300 new towns while also working on regional plans and community revitalization projects. Their codes have been adopted throughout the world.

Duany has lectured internationally and is the co-author of three books including his most recent on smart growth. He is a founder of the Congress of New Urbanism and has won several prestigious awards for his architecture and planning work.

We love folk rock.

In fact, we are listening to The Byrds while typing this.

And just like the song “Turn, Turn,Turn” says, there is a time for free music. And that time is Friday night Nov. 15 at 7:30 at the Delray Center for the Arts, 51 N. Swinton Ave.

This week’s band is “The KillBillies” (love that name) and they rock.

Formed in January  2011, The KillBillies are Ben Childs, Luke Pennell and Micah Scott. Based in West Palm Beach, they are all touring veterans who have come together through a shared love of rowdy, rootsy music that speaks to the soul and has something to say. Their combined mission is simple, to stand on the shoulders of musical giants of the past to see the future. Playing banjo, mandolin, guitars, dobro, upright bass, tin whistle, saxophone, and a foot percussion rhythm section, they draw on their knowledge of Celtic music, Bluegrass, Folk, Punk, Rock and Country to create their sound. Sounds good to us.

Food trucks, limited chair rental and friends. You can’t go wrong.

 Chris Evert Pro Celebrity Classic

If you want to do a little stargazing this weekend, check out the Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic Nov. 15-17 at the Delray Beach Tennis Stadium.

More than just “hit and giggle” tennis, the event raises big money for charity. Last year, more than $600,000 was raised in three days to fight drug abuse and child neglect in Florida.

Since 1989, close to $21 million has been raised by Chris and friends.

This year, look for Jon Lovitz, Alan Thicke, Pat McEnroe, Boca’s own Vince Spadea, Martina Navratilova, Pam Shriver, Mats Wilander, rock star Gavin Rossdale and the sublime Elisabeth Shue among others.

For ticket info, visit https://www.chrisevert.org/

Have a safe weekend and remember Viva Las Vegas and Delray-Boca.

Weekend Best Bets: A Girls Night Out, Wine & Seafood, Zumba And More

Perfect for a Girls Night Out

Perfect for a Girls Night Out

The weekend starts early in Boca/Delray. So take a deep breath, there’s a ton of stuff to do starting tonight.

A Great Girls Night Out

Did you like the book “50 Shades of Grey?” We didn’t read it, but we hear it’s something else.

On Nov. 7 and 8, the Crest Theatre at the Delray Center for the Arts at Old School Square will present a spoof on the cultural phenomenon entitled “Cuff Me.”

Tickets are $40 and show time is 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday Night.

“CUFF ME” is the unauthorized, hilarious parody of the Fifty Shades of Grey bestseller. This highly entertaining performance dives into a sexually charged romance in true satirical fashion. Get ready to laugh at this sexy, hysterical romp.

CUFF ME features a score of pop hits (with altered lyrics) performed by a cast of four.  The show jumps back and forth between two women reading the series with scenes of actual events from the novel…with a parody twist, of course.

Don’t expect to see a literal translation of Fifty Shades on the stage — this show is all about sending up the phenomenon with over-the-top performances, wild comedy and a slew of musical numbers that turn pop music on its head.

We await your reviews.

For the Kids

If Cuff Me is for the adults, then we suggest this for the kids.

“Steam Trunk Circus” featuring our good friends Riley Roam and Kenny Mikey is set for Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. also at the Crest Theatre.

The talented duo will perform an educational show that explores the themes of “STEAM”, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

The show is free and seating is on a first come, first served basis.

Trust us on this one, Page Turner Adventures never disappoints.
