WellFest: Get Your Tickets

WellFest Founder Bob Lipp and Sandra Tribioli want to position Delray as a wellness destination.

WellFest Founder Bob Lipp and Sandra Tribioli want to position Delray as a wellness destination.

When long-time marketing executive, Bob Lipp, created WellFest™ Delray, he combined his passion for “expanding the wellness conversation” and his considerable marketing skills to carefully connect the event’s message with a growing audience.

“It was important that WellFest not be perceived as simply another health and wellness event,” said Lipp. “And so we developed a mission statement and defined the parameters for Exhibitors, Sponsors and Expert Speakers.”

Lipp also applied for a US trademark of the term WellFest, which was awarded a few months after the event debuted in March of 2013.

“The mission of WellFest Delray 2014 (the weekend of March 8-9, from 11AM – 5PM) is to: Educate, inform, motivate and inspire people to stay fit, eat well, think positive, reduce stress, take care of themselves and others and think green. We encourage people to participate in a ‘WellFest-lifestyle’ and benefit from being proactive about their health and well-being, as opposed to being reactive,” added Lipp. “The goal is to embrace preventative measures and focus on how the mind, body, spirit connection can impact our health in so many positive ways.”

Lipp also remembers a time when a WellFest-lifestyle wasn’t part of mainstream thinking, and a variety of today’s accepted therapies, food concerns and even exercise programs were called into question or considered a fad.

He told us that “Earlier in my career, I taught Communications at The Ohio State University, and earned my Master’s Degree after writing a thesis entitled: The Image Making of Body Building.

“I created a marketing model for improving image and applied it to what was then a low credibility sport. My subject was a guy I met at a gym in Brooklyn, who was working in Columbus. Ohio. Perhaps you’ve heard of him, Lou Ferrigno? Then a guy named Arnold Schwarzenegger came to town to launch his Mr. Olympia contest and I assisted with local promotions.”

“While these two individuals helped legitimize a sport, what they really did was make it OK for men and women to participate in a lifestyle that resulted in more than building muscles. It helped to build self-respect and self-esteem; and what’s more positive than that?”

In just its second year, WellFest Delray has emerged to be a significant and important event, but for Lipp, one of his proudest moments was being able to use some of the money from the grass roots event to fund an awards program at a local school.

“Banyan Creek Elementary School is our first recipient of a cash award that will go to students who advocate or exemplify the importance of fitness, good nutrition and self-esteem, said Lipp. “Students selected will be according to guidelines set up by the school.”

The program was particularly important for Sandra Tribioli, Director of Operations for WellFest and a mother of three school-aged children. “It’s great when an event like WellFest or a business or an individual can make such a positive impact on our children, and we are pleased that Principal Fay and Vice Principal L’Etoile have been so gracious in accepting our offer.”

The “Weekend of WellFest” March 8-9, 2014 (11AM – 5PM) at Delray Center for the Arts and Hyatt Place promises something for everyone.

Currently there are 20 Sponsors and over 90 Exhibitors, Food Services and Speakers. Sponsors include: Acupuncture Associates, Celsius, a calorie burning beverage, Fiesta Pet Deli, Delray Center for the Arts, Delray Chamber of Commerce, Delray Library, Delray Medical Center, Gulfstream Business Bank, Health & Wellness Magazine, Hyatt Place Delray, Javita Coffee, Mint Fit 111, Naked Gourmet, Mind, Body and Spirit Café, Smart Car Palm Beach, Synergy Fitness Boca, The Crystal Garden, 21 Drops, Yoga Journey and Zaaz Studios.

Speakers include noted area author Margaret Lembo, who has written several books for adults and one for children on Chakra and Crystals, and Dr. Brian Clement, of the famed Hippocrates Health Institute.

Support and interest in this educational and inspirational event that features an Expo, Expert Speaker Sessions, Fitness/Well-being Center, WellPet area and Eat Well Food & Beverage Court grows every day.

“The support has been impressive, to say the least” states Bob Lipp the event creator. “In just our second year, we’ve seen businesspeople and organizations that support businesses, residents and visitors from Delray and surrounding areas get behind this important event.”

The event will take place under an open-air structure outdoors at Delray Center for The Arts (off Swinton and Atlantic Avenues in downtown Delray) as well as the meeting rooms at Hyatt Place from 11AM – 5PM, Saturday and Sunday.

For a $15 fee ($20 for both days), attendees will receive a range of high-value savings at many Wellness-related businesses, an Expert Speaker Series at Hyatt Place with over 20 Speakers and topics, food samples from some of Delray’s top restaurants, a range of product samples, entertainment and demonstrations, consultation with experts, and even free massage stations throughout the event.

Well, you might want to attend Sotheby’s Appraisal Day March 1 at FAU’s student union.

The event runs from 9am-2:30pm.

There is a $45 per item fee for a professional, verbal appraisal.

Renowned Experts from Sotheby’s will be on hand to offer appraisals of art, antiques, jewelry and more.

International art experts Tom Denzler, Cynthia Volk, and Jan Willem van Haaren of Sotheby’s New York will be on hand to provide verbal appraisals of estimated value for American and European paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, Asian items, decorative arts and European furniture. Noted Florida art, antique, and jewelry experts Russ Kodner, Craig Patrick, and Kevin Taylor of Kodner Galleries in Dania Beach; Albert Levy of A.B. Levy’s in Palm Beach; and Rico Baca of Palm Beach Modern Auctions in West Palm Beach will be available for verbal appraisals of estimated value for art, American folk art, antiques, decorative arts, jewelry, and vintage items.

“This is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in finding out the value of a piece of art, jewelry or furniture they may have inherited or purchased,” said David Miller, a member of FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters Advisory Board, and appraisal expert. “It is rare for such an occasion to meet with an esteemed Sotheby’s authority. They and our renowned Florida-based specialists have generously offered their time and expertise for a great cause— supporting student scholarships at FAU. They are also offering their services at a considerable discount.”

All appraisals are verbal only, and are $45 per item. Photographs of larger pieces of furniture are acceptable in place of having the item on site at FAU. All proceeds from the event will benefit the FAU student scholarship fund.

Early Elton at Crest Theater

We love Elton John.

In fact, Dave has a collection of eyewear that honors the legendary rocker.

But we really prefer his early years to the late career schmaltz. At least I do. Dave’s middle name is Schmaltz.

That’s why we are recommending the show “Early Elton” at the Crest Theatre, this Friday at 8 p.m.

This dynamic show is a tribute to the music Elton John wrote and sang during his “Trio Period “ with Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson, from 1970-1972.

Featuring Jeff Kazee (piano and vocals), Rich Pagano (drums and vocals) and John Conte (bass and vocals), the show is sure to appeal to those who love Elton’s work.

As the story goes, Elton’s label didn’t have the funds to send him out on a U.S. tour with a full band, but Elton needed to promote his pending releases.

He brought Dee and Nigel on board and rearranged the songs and vocals to fit within the limitations of this trio. Suddenly, a new sound emerged that was both raw and poignant.

The rest as they say..is history.

Weekend Best Bets: Garlic Fest, Golf and Good Causes

Mr. Garlic, the one, the only Tom Johnston.

Mr. Garlic, the one, the only Tom Johnston.

Well, you have a few significant choices for fun and entertainment this weekend.

So, rather than make a choice you might as well attend both and then plan to crash on the couch Sunday night.

Here goes…..

Garlic Fest

Delray Beach is hosting the 15th Annual “Best Stinkin’ Party in Town” at the Garlic Festival. No question, this is one of the best festivals in South Florida….as long as you go with other people who’ll be experiencing halitosis.  It features all that is good about garlic with cooking classes, a Garlic Chef cooking competition, and such culinary delights as Garlic Ice Cream, Argentinean Garlic BBQ, and Garlic Fest Crab Cakes.

Just don’t breathe on anyone. You’ll see why it’s the “Best Stinkin’ Party in Town.”

What’s even better is that the event is a fund raising source for local non-profits that serve education and arts for youths.

The event runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all along Atlantic Avenue. For more info, visit https://dbgarlicfest.com/

We plan to be there to hear the B Street Band, a tribute to our favorite artist Bruce Springsteen and to hear a great U2 cover band,

“Cover your eyes and you’ll swear it’s Bono,” says Garlic Fest co-organizer Bern Ryan. We trust Bern. We really do.

Allianz in Boca

For your golf enthusiasts (moi!), The Allianz Championship, sponsored by Insperity, tees off Friday morning at the Broken Sound Old Course. It features some senior and PGA legends, including Nick Price, Rocco Mediate, Tom Lehman, Bernhard Langer, Fuzzy Zoeller, and many more.

Boca Raton Regional Hospital is the primary charity of the tournament. A total  of 18 other organizations will also receive support.

For more information visit: www.allianzchampionship.com.

So…..what’s your choice? A “stinkin’” party or a golf tournament. We’re saying go to both. But if you attend the Garlic Festival first, stay with your friends and don’t breathe on anyone on the golf course.

Here’s a few more best bets.

The “Fantasy Foursome” comes to Delray

The 2014 Beth Daniel Golf Clinic will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014, 11:00 am, at the Delray Beach Golf Club (DBGC), 2200 Highland Avenue.  The clinic will feature a “Fantastic Foursome” of women professionals including World Golf Hall of Fame member Beth Daniel, 2013 Solheim Captain Meg Mallon, 2014 LPGA Q School winner Jaye Marie Green and 2013 Big Break star Stefanie Kenoyer.  The clinic is free and open to the public.

For 23 years, Daniel, a local resident,  has assembled professional friends and colleagues to present this clinic in cooperation with JCD Sports Group, Inc., managers of the City’s DBGC Municipal course.  Coordinating this event is Sandra Eriksson, former director of golf and current seasonal LPGA teaching professional at DBGC.  “This is arguably one of the absolute best combinations of players we’ve ever had at this event,” says Eriksson.  The event will be mc’d by Annette Thompson, BallenIsles Country Club LPGA Master Teaching Professional.

The “Fantastic Foursome” are South Florida residents and their respective professional careers range from Daniel’s “Rookie of the Year” title in 1979 to Green’s record setting 29 under par score at the LPGA Qualifying Tournament this past December.  All four have experience as USGA Women’s Open participants and Mallon owns the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open title.

Bleacher seating is limited so arrive early.  For more information, contact Sandra Eriksson at (561) 704-6964 or call DBGC at (561) 243-7380.  Note:  During the event, donations will be accepted with proceeds benefiting Breast Cancer Research.

About the “Fantastic Foursome”

Beth Daniel began playing the game at the age of six.  She is a two-time U.S. Amateur Champion and has collected numerous titles and every award given by the LPGA – many of them multiple times.  In 2000, Daniel was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.  She captained the U.S. Solheim Cup Team to victory in 2009.

Meg Mallon, fresh off her captainship of the 2013 U.S. Solheim Cup, also owns numerous LPGA titles to go along with her 2004 USGA Women’s Open Championship.  Her fourth round score of 65 is the lowest ever recorded for a final round in that event.  Mallon’s numerous LPGA awards are complemented by membership in more than a handful of athletic halls of fame.  As a playing member of eight Solheim Cup teams, she shares the all-time best Solheim scoring average with Juli Inkster.

Jaye Marie Green, at the age of 19, roared onto the 2014 LPGA scene with a 29-under total at this winter’s qualifying tournament.  Her professional experience includes the 2013 season on the LPGA’s Symetra Tour but her amateur record speaks volumes:  Two U.S. Open appearances as an amateur; 2011 Junior Solheim team member; runner-up to Lydia Ko in the U.S. Women’s Amateur; ranked #1 woman amateur in the nation in 2012; and posting a top-50 finish, as an amateur, at the LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Stefanie Kenoyer was a familiar face on Golf Channel in 2013, appearing in both “Big Break-Mexico” and “Big Break NFL-Puerto Rico”.  In addition to filming all over the world, Kenoyer competed on the LPGA’s Symetra Tour, recording numerous top ten finishes.  Her competitive history includes two collegiate conference titles; a U.S. Open appearance as an amateur; 8th place in the World Collegiate Championship and multiple “Player of the Year” conference titles.

Water Cooler Wednesday: An Interview With Garlic Fest Founder Nancy Stewart-Franczak

Nancy Stewart-Franczak has helped make Delray America's Most Fun City

Nancy Stewart-Franczak has helped make Delray America’s Most Fun City

Editor’s Note:

About 10 years ago, Nancy Stewart-Franczak called me up and said she wanted to take me to the “stinkiest” city in America, Gilroy, California. She was organizing a trip to Gilroy to visit their Garlic Festival and she felt the mayor (me at the time) needed to see what the possibilities of the festival were. I was blown away. The entire Gilroy community turned out for the Garlic Fest which was both a financial boom for the town and a great bonding experience for residents. That trip gave me insight into Nancy and how she thinks and works. She’s all about Delray and she believes in the power of events to make money and to bring a community together. We sat down with Nancy on the eve of The Garlic Festival (feb. 7-9) to discuss the event, her philosophy and some surprising impacts that events bring to our community.

Garlic Fest is coming up fast, tell us how the festival has evolved over the years and what to expect this year?

Garlic Fest has grown from:
– an attendance of 2,000 and an opening budget of $10,000 to an attendance of 40,000 and an opening budget of over $400,000.

– from featuring local musical acts to national recording acts

– from a locally recognized event to nationwide recognition!

– Garlic Fest also brought home five International Awards and 11 state of Florida awards to the City of Delray Beach last year.

What keeps you motivated after so many years and special events?
That’s easy – passion.  I always say that running events is not for the faint at heart.  For me personally, I discovered it’s in my blood.  My favorite part of producing events is opening night, watching all the people arrive and wondering which of our guerilla marketing efforts touched these people. I am also motivated by the fact that we are a fund-raiser for 11 other non-profit organizations in our city.

Why are special events important for Delray Beach?
I feel strongly that special events are one of the main reasons Delray Beach is on the map!
Beginning with Art and Jazz on the Avenue, street events were initiated to attract visitors into our downtown over 15 years ago.  In the early days, many of us sat on committees to outline goals and visions for Delray.  It is so rewarding to still be a resident and business owner in town and to look around and realize that what we envisioned has come to fruition,  Events attract visitors to Delray Beach and while here, they discover all the treasures in our beautiful seaside town – the restaurants, the shops, the beach, etc.

We know, some folks complain, but is there a reason to keep innovating in Delray, or should the city just stop doing events?
Someone will always complain.  Each event produced benefits business in different ways.  There is no exact fit for all.  Take them away, however, and I am certain that we will realize very quickly the importance of special events in our community.  Other cities that we work with marvel at the success Delray Beach has seen and would love to see successful events produced in their towns.

This festival is interesting in that it raises money for local non-profits. How much has Garlic Fest raised over the years?
As of last year, Delray Beach Garlic Fest has contributed over $430,000 back to the non-profit organizations that staff the event.  This year we are confident to hit the $500,000 mark.
YourDelrayBoca will have full coverage of the Garlic Festival next week. Thanks, Nancy for sharing your thoughts! Visit https://dbgarlicfest.com/ for more info.

The Resolvers were rained out last fall but agreed to come back and play the free Friday Concert Series at the pavilion. The music begins at 7:30 p.m.

2nd Annual Ride 4 Orphans

Ride for Orphans

Ride 4 Orphans

Spanish River Church is hosting its 2nd annual Ride 4 Orphans charity bike ride on Saturday, February 15.  But we mention this early, because we want you to register.

Proceeds from the event will benefit orphans in Chad and Malawi (in Africa), in Haiti and foster children at The Place of Hope/Haven Campus in Boca Raton.

The ride starts and finishes at Spanish River Church in Boca Raton.  This year there is a choice of 30 and 62-mile routes through Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth, and Palm Beach. Riders return to Spanish River Church on scenic AIA.  There are five rest stops along the routes hosted by partner churches:  Boynton Beach Community Church, Lake Osborne Church, Truth Point Church, West Park Baptist Church and The Avenue Church.  New this year is a Kid’s Fun Ride which will feature a four mile ride and activities for children ages 6 to 12.

Last year’s ride raised funds to provide reliable power for orphanages in Chad, Malawi and Haiti. It was the first time these orphanages had access to electricity.  An example of this is Fayeton orphanage in Gonaives, Haiti where a solar power system purchased with Ride 4 Orphans funds was installed to provide light and power along with a refrigerator and freezer for the children there.  Funds from this year’s event will go to continue those projects as well as to benefit Place of Hope, The Haven Campus in Boca Raton. The place of hope provides support and homes for children in foster care

The ride starts at 7:30 am with the kids activities beginning at 9 am.  A light breakfast is served before the ride and there is an after-ride luncheon with entertainment, awards and raffle prizes. T-shirts and goody bags will be given to the first 400 registered riders.

A Night of Miracles and Music” to Benefit Milagro Center

Sponsored by the Delray Beach Initiative

The Delray Beach Initiative will be hosting “A Night of Miracles and Music” this Saturday, January 18th, 2014 at Kevro’s Art Bar from 6:30 – 10:30 PM to benefit the Milagro Center. Highlights of the night include the outstanding talents of Teri Catlin, JD Danner and Michelle Lynn as well as dazzling artwork by Milagro students on display and for sale, and a variety of interesting raffle prizes. This event is sponsored by the Delray Beach Initiative and hosted by Delray Beach’s own Steve Martel. Attendees will be asked for a suggested donation of $10 at the door. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information on the event, including sponsorship opportunities, please contact Steve Martel at 561-573-3728 or visit www.steveandlorimartel.com.

Located in one of the most economically challenged neighborhoods in Delray Beach, Milagro (which means “miracle” in Spanish) Center is a nonprofit organization providing cultural arts, academic support, non-sectarian Living Values education and mentoring to the community’s most at-risk children living at or below the federal poverty level. Students attending Milagro Center gain an indestructible sense of self worth and succeed academically through participation in Milagro’s uniquely integrated curriculum. This past academic school year, 100% of the children attending Milagro Center were promoted to the next grade level. This is a significant outcome, considering that nearly 40% of all at-risk youth nationwide do not graduate from high school. Milagro Center’s social impact on the community at large is evident in the success of its children.

“The support of the community is vital to ensuring the long-term success of a child who starts life at risk of educational and social failure,” says Milagro Center’s Executive Director Barbara Stark. “With the involvement of caring and committed individuals and local companies, the cycle of poverty and academic failure can be reversed. We hope the community will support us by coming out to this fun event and by doing so, help to ensure that our children will have a better and brighter future.”

Blues Festival & Theatre Highlights Upcoming Shows at Mizner Park

For some of us from the 1960s, the upcoming Boca Sunshine Music & Blues Festival at Mizner Park just might be something to consider. Jeff probably missed out on some of these bands, but I can certainly  make a recommendation for the youngsters…After all, there really hasn’t been any good music made after the late 70s.

So, on Saturday, January 18 on two stages at Mizner Park there will be an all-day festival featuring some great acts, including several of my personal favorites – Hot Tuna and Leon Russell. Others highlighting the event include the Tedeschi Trucks Bank, Galactic, Stanley Clarke, the Ringers and several others.

Doors open at the Mizner Park Amphitheater at 11:30 and the show starts at noon. For ticket and more information, visit www.sunshinemusicandblues.com.

For The Culture Vultures

It’s a busy weekend, and for you culture vultures the Outre Theatre Company is presenting The Journey Jan. 17-19 also at Mizner Park. The Friday and Saturday shows start at 8 p.m. Sunday, the show starts at 7 p.m. Visit www.theoutretheatrecompany.com for more information.

Our recommendation: Don’t miss Hot Tuna!!
