The Monkees are back and coming to Boca.
Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, and Peter Tork are joining forces for a nationwide summer tour entitled “A Midsummer’s Night with the Monkees” that will stop at the Mizner Park Amphitheater Saturday, July 27, at 8:00pm
Tickets range from $39.50-$125.00. The show will go on rain or shine. Preferred parking adjacent to the venue can be reserved for $20.00.
The Monkees were a 1960s phenomenon with a hit TV show, several Top 40 singles and a rabid fan base that has turned out for reunion tours for the past 30 plus years.
Lead singer Davy Jones, a former teenage heartthrob and Florida resident, passed away in February 2012. But the Monkees endure with a catalog that includes “Last Train to Clarksville”, “I’m a Believer”, “Pleasant Valley Sunday”, “Daydream Believer” and more.
The original quartet was conceived as a TV version of The Beatles, and featured three Americans and a Brit (Jones). The show ran from 1966-70, but during the course of the production the manufactured band became a real one.
Says Dolenz of the band’s unlikely success: “The Monkees really becoming a band was like the equivalent of Leonard Nimoy really becoming a Vulcan.”
Interestingly, members of The Monkees befriended The Beatles and can be seen in Beatle home movies shot in the 60s. John Lennon thought the Monkees were the modern day equivalent of the Marx Brothers and told Dolenz that he never missed a show.
Aside from acting and comedic chops, the four stars of the show had musical talent as well.
Jones was a stage trained singer, Dolenz is an accomplished vocalist, Tork plays guitar and Nesmith is an innovator who writes songs and is sometimes credited as a creator of the music video.
The Monkees reunited for a 45th anniversary tour in 2011-12. The band received positive reviews and a strong fan response prompted the summer tour.
