Free Movie Friday

Head on over to Art House Delray for a free movie tonight beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“Wasteland” is the flick and the nice folks at Art House will provide the pop corn and the yerba mate. You’ll have to bring your own candy and beach chair.

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” — self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Directed by Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) Wasteland was a hit at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Art House is located at 255 NE Sixth Ave.

Music at St. Paul’s

Make room on the calendar this weekend for a 3 p.m. Sunday concert at beautiful St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on South Swinton Avenue.

Pianist Roberta Rust and mezza soprano Maria Heslop Ward will perform Mozart, Brahms, Mahler and more.

Suggested donation is $15. Preferred seating is $20 and students are $5.

You simply can’t beat the sound at this historic church.
