Delray Center for the Arts Launches New Summer Film Series

casablancaAttention movie lovers.

Art Cinema is coming to Delray this summer with an eight week series of eclectic films that will be screened in the comfortable and historic Crest Theatre at the Delray Center for the Arts at Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave.

“ART CINEMA AT THE CREST” will offer a variety of films on eight consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 10 and running through Aug. 28. Screenings are at 6 and 8:30 p.m.

Caroline Breder-Watts, midday host for 91.3 WLRN and host of “Cinematically Speaking” on Arts Radio Network, will host each 8:30 pm screening – providing an introduction and leading a post-screening talkback session. Tickets for each screening are $8 and a cash bar will be available.

“We’re looking to create a very unique experience,” says Center Director Joe Gillie. “We think this is going to be a very popular series.”

A Kiss is Just a Kiss and The Dude

The cinema fest kicks off July 10 with the classic Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

This 1942 film set in North Africa tops many critics’ list as one of the best films of all time.

The series continues July 17 with the cult classic “The Big Lebowski” starring Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges and John Goodman.

This 1998 film follows the adventures of “The Dude” portrayed memorably by Bridges.

On July 24, the series gives us a change of pace with the classic story “Anna Karenina” starring Matthew Macfadyen, Keira Knightley and Jude Law.  Set in late-19th-century Russian high-society, the aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair with the affluent Count Vronsky.

The film was released in 2012 to rave reviews.

On July 31, the critically acclaimed but little seen “Price Check” will be screened.

The film stars indie darling Parker Posey with Eric Mabius and Annie Parisse.

Peter, a family man who works for a failing supermarket chain finds his life shaken up by his new boss, Susan, who starts to groom him for an executive position in this comedy drama.

Roc Doc and Retired Musicians

On August 7, music lovers won’t want to miss “Sound City”, a documentary featuring Tom Petty and Mick Fleetwood.

The doc traces the history of the famed Van Nuys, California recording studio.

On August 14, fans of Dustin Hoffman won’t want to miss his directorial debut “Quartet.”

The popular film, in current release, stars the legendary Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay and Billy Connolly. The action takes place in a senior home populated by retired musicians.

On Aug. 21, youth is served with the outstanding drama “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” starring Emma Watson.

Based on a popular novel, “Perks” is a great coming of age story with amazing performances, crisp writing and a killer soundtrack. Don’t miss this one.

The series concludes Aug. 28 with “If I Were You”, a 2012 comedy/drama starring Marcia Gay Harden, Leonor Watling and Aidan Quinn.  When a woman tries to outwit her husband’s sexy young mistress, the unexpected consequences include starring as King Lear in a very amateur production – with the mistress. Enough said.
