New Trolleys Roll Out in Delray

A new look for Delray's downtown trolley

A new look for Delray’s downtown trolley

Say goodbye to the non-descript  bus–and hello to a brand new trolley system in Delray.

The City of Delray Beach has announced that the Downtown Roundabout shuttle system will be converted from the existing mini-shuttle buses to new, air conditioned trolleys. The new trolley system will continue to offer FREE transportation on Atlantic Avenue, between the Tri-Rail Station and the Municipal Beach, and service is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 1, 2013.

Funding Partnership

Funding to purchase the three new trolleys was provided through a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) grant ($300,000 – which includes operational costs) and the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), $550,000. All of the new trolleys are ADA compliant (American with Disabilities Act) and will provide efficient, comfortable service throughout the downtown area.

In addition, the City has partnered with the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) to provide $75,000 per year, on a 2-year trial period, for trolley service between Tri-Rail, the downtown core area and the Municipal Beach. It is expected that a long term partnership will be developed, which would continue to provide necessary funding to assist in efficient dependable commuter opportunities in Delray Beach.

The addition of the new trolleys should be a popular move with riders and residents. Over the years– while the shuttle buses provided reliable service– there was ample criticism of how they looked. In fact, some people said they refused to ride the buses because the windows were covered and you couldn’t see who was on board.

The new trolley system should alleviate that issue because you can see into the trolley.

Routes and Hours of Operation:

The new trolley system will continue to offer FREE service on Atlantic Avenue from the Delray Beach Tri-Rail Station on South Congress Avenue to the Municipal Beach (Ocean Boulevard/SR A1A). Service hours have been extended as follows:

ROUTE 1

Roundtrip service along Atlantic Avenue from Tri-Rail to Ocean Blvd/SR A1A

Monday – Friday, 6:00 am – 7:00 pm

Saturday & Sunday, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm

ROUTE 2

Roundtrip service along Atlantic Avenue from Tri-Rail to Ocean Blvd/SR A1A

Monday – Friday, 6:45 am – 11:15 pm

Saturday & Sunday, 12:00 pm noon – 11:00 pm

NOTE:  No pets, only service dogs will be permitted to ride.

PLEASE NOTE: Routes and service times are subject to change. While every effort will be made to run the routes “on-time,” delays may occur (i.e., traffic, number of stops, etc.) that may prevent the trolley from reaching a location at a particular time. It is recommended to seek alternative transit options for scheduled appointments and/or engagements.
